Who We Help.
Anyone experienceing symptoms of Irlen Syndrome could benefit from an assessment, common symptoms can be found in the F.A.Q section. The Irlen Method has been reported to benefit individuals with the following conditions:

However, you do not have to have a diagnosed reading or learning difficulty to benefit from the Irlen Method, even good readers and gifted students can be helped.

I have worked in SEN for 7 years, I currently work with students who have Dyslexia and other SpLDs. I have an undergraduate degree in Applied Psychology and a masters degree also in Psychology. I am originally from Bradford West Yorkshire but have lived in Cheadle for 3 years with my partner and our 2 cats. I am passionate about educating people about Irlen Syndrome and how it differs from Dyslexia, as a dyslexic individual with Irlen Syndrome it is important to me that others benefit from my help and knowledge.

Irlen Syndrome; also known as Meares-Irlen Syndrome, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS) and Visual Stress, is not a visual impairment. Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual processing disorder that affects the brain’s ability to accurately process visual information due to light sensitivity.  



The most common symptoms are:
  • Eye strain
  • Headaches/migraine

  • Restlessness, anxiety, irritability, dizziness or mood changing
  • Poor performance in sports
  • Depth-perception problems
  • Slow or inefficient reading
  • Poor reading comprehension

  • Difficulty with copying
  • Difficulty with maths

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia refers to a number of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words.

Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual processing disorder, meaning that it relates specifically to how the brain processes the visual information it receives. It is not a language-based disorder.
